Three sigma? Try eight. The S&P just reminded us that markets don’t read textbooks—missing one monster day could cost your year. This chart shows how extraordinary recent S&P 500 daily returns have been: April 3, 2025: -4.8% (-4.1σ) → Once every ~193 years April 4, 2025: -6.0% (-5.0σ) → Expected once every ~13'800 years April 9, 2025: +9.5% (+7.9σ) → A staggering once every ~2.8 trillion years These aren’t just rare — they’re statistically impossible under a normal distribution. Yet they happened within a single week. Key takeaway: Equity market returns do NOT follow a normal distribution. They exhibit fat tails, skewness, and volatility clustering, leading to more frequent extreme events than the normal curve predicts. If you tried to time the market and bailed during the back-to-back sell-offs on April 3–4, you likely missed one of the best single-day gains in history just days later. Strategy implication: Stay invested and diversified. Don’t try to predict the unpredictable. If you're playing binary events, use non-directional strategies instead of betting one way. Because when the market decides to break the rules — it really breaks them.
